Who is at Risk for Skin Cancer?

Anyone who is exposed to the sun, ultraviolet light or tanning beds is at risk for skin cancer. While people with a lighter skin tone may be more vulnerable, no one is totally exempt. Since it is impossible for any of us in North Myrtle Beach to avoid the outdoors entirely, we are all susceptible.

The good news is most skin cancer lesions and early stage skin cancer respond well to treatment. Therefore, it is important to be screened for skin cancer regularly and talk to your dermatologist about skin cancer prevention.

The best skin health begins with a skin cancer screening.  Please call our office at 843-399-9965 to schedule your appointment.

Let's Talk about the Skin Cancer Types

While one in five Americans will develop skin cancer, not all will develop the same kind of skin cancer. Malignant tumors come in different sizes, shapes and forms. Some are aggressive, some are slow-growing, some are rare and some are common.

The three types of skin cancer are:
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Malignant Melanoma
Our dermatology and skin cancer center treats those in North Myrtle Beach for all types of skin cancer. If you have concerns about a mole or skin spot and would like a skin cancer check, call us at 843-399-9965 or visit our main website.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

The most common type of skin cancer is Basal Cell Carcinoma. Generally, a slow growing skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma typically forms on areas of the body that are highly exposed to ultraviolet light and the sun.

These areas include the arms, hands, ears, neck, face and scalp.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Squamous Cell Carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer. It has the potential to grow deep but is almost always curable when treated in the early stages.

Because it can also spread to other parts of the body, squamous cell carcinoma is often surgically removed. While it appears on areas frequently exposed to the sun, this type of skin cancer can occur anywhere.

Malignant Melanoma - Cancerous Moles

Malignant Melanoma is very dangerous as it is the most deadly form of skin cancer. It can present itself as a new mole or develop within an existing mole. I

t is very important to have a mole check as cancerous moles can appear very suddenly and without warning.

Early skin cancer diagnosis and immediate treatment is vital to beating malignant melanoma. If you are in North Myrtle Beach and have identified a new mole or have noticed changes in an existing mole, please contact our office for an appointment.

Skin Cancer Warning Signs

Raised or flat, scar-like or scaly, skin cancer bumps, lumps and spots look different. They do, however, have some similar characteristics. Beware of skin spots that don’t heal or reoccur. Also, take notice of new or changing moles and bumps or lumps that grow rapidly.

Even though the look and feel of skin cancer can vary, probable warning signs include:
  • A mole that changes in color, size or shape
  • A recurring sore that bleeds
  • A reddish and/or scaly patch that doesn’t heal
  • A lump with a central depression that may grow quickly
Set an appointment promptly for suspicious areas.  Call 843-399-9965 or complete the online form.
