Skin Cancer Types and Treatment Options

Not all skin cancer is the same. Therefore, our skin cancer specialists apply different types of skin cancer treatment to different types of skin cancer.

Our experienced team works with North Myrtle Beach residents in all stages, from precancerous skin lesions to early stage skin cancer to advanced skin cancer.

Making yourself aware and being conscious of early skin cancer signs will help you defend yourself against skin cancer. We recommend investing in a skin cancer screening and ongoing preventative measures. Here at Atlantic Dermatology we detect, diagnose and provide treatment options for:
  • Precancerous Skin Lesions
  • Actinic Keratosis
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Malignant Melanoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma and Treatment Options

Early stage basal cell carcinoma is easily treated. It is the most common type of skin cancer and appears in places, which see a lot of sun.

Skin cancer on the face, hands and arms can be the result of basal cell carcinoma. Look out for skin spots such as:
  • Flesh colored to brown pearly type lumps
  • A reddish patch, which may itch and will not heal
  • A scar-like taut or shiny area
  • An open sore that bleeds, heals and returns
  • A raised area, which may or may not have blood vessels
While basal cell cancer rarely spreads, it can invade surrounding tissue. This type of skin cancer has a low death toll and is often surgically removed.

For Basal Cell Carcinoma treatment or to schedule an appointment for a skin cancer check, call our office at 843-399-9965.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Treatment Options
A dangerous type of skin cancer is squamous cell carcinoma. It is dangerous because it can spread and grow deep within the skin. It can be found anywhere on the body and may present itself as skin cancer bumps with a central depression and/or cancerous warts.

We ask our North Myrtle Beach residents to be aware of:
  • An open sore, which bleeds and may last for weeks
  • A wart-like growth that is scaly and rough
  • A bleeding lump, which may grow quickly and includes a central depression
  • A red patch, which is scaly, crusty and bleeds
For early detection, which is almost always curable, we urge you to pay close attention to changes within your skin. Squamous cell skin cancer must be taken seriously because left untreated, it can be deadly.

Contact our office at 843-399-9965 or visit our main website.  to schedule an appointment for a skin cancer check, to see if you require Squamous Cell Carcinoma treatment.
Malignant Melanoma and Treatment Options
Cancerous moles are part of a rare skin cancer called malignant melanoma. This type of skin cancer is the most deadly and accounts for one death every hour. Checking your skin for new and changing moles is critical.

Keep an eye out for:
  • Moles that change in size, shape or color
  • Moles that itch and/or bleed
  • A new mole or dark spot that may itech or bleed
Malignant melanoma is the leading form of cancer in women 25 to 29 years and is the second most common form of cancer in women and adolescent females 15-29 years of age. The best way to combat it is early detection.

We encourage and invite all of the residents in North Myrtle Beach to come in for a skin cancer screening and mole check.

Precancerous Skin Lesions and Treatment Options
Our treatment options for precancerous skin lesions and actinic keratosis include Photodynamic Therapy. This latest advancement is an in-office procedure offered to our North Myrtle Beach patients.

It starts with levulinic acid, a topical medication, which is applied to areas of precancerous skin. After a determined amount of time, a blue light is directed to the affected area. This blue light in conjunction with the levulinic acid, aims to destroy precancerous skin cells.

While exposure to the BLU-U Light sometimes has a slight stinging sensation, our patients tolerate the procedure very well. In some cases, a “sunburned” look and feel may appear for 4-7 days after treatment.

Options for Skin Cancer Prevention
Wearing sunscreen and being sun smart is the best way to prevent skin cancer. We recommend avoiding direct, long-term exposure between high sun times, 10 AM and 3 PM and staying out of tanning beds.

Applying sunscreen every two hours can help prevent a blistering sunburn, which will put you at risk for skin cancer.

If you are concerned about any changes in warts, moles or skin abnormalities, contact us today to schedule an appointment.
